ALM Fireman in ActionThe Almuñécar fire service announced that the fire in a hay-storage shed in Molvízar was finally declared out yesterday morning at 09.00h.

The fire began around 22.00h on Wednesday, according to the Fire Chief, José Manuel Rivas: “The fire-fighting task lasted some 36 hours owing to the amount of hay bales on the premises.” The hay bales were for the 1,500 goats belonging to the owner of the store shed.

The storage shed is the one just above the Molvízar gasolinera and virtually next to the junction leading into the village.

The Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of the fire, which to date is still unknown.ALM Molvizar fire 01

Such was the intensity of the heat that one of the fire crew was overcome by heatstroke and had to be treated in the area hospital of Santa Ana in Motril. Fortunately, he had fully recovered and was discharged by Thursday evening.

Not only did the fire cause the corrugated-iron roof to collapse, but it also affected the telephone lines that pass overhead, servicing both Ítrabo and Molvízar. At one point, the Almuñecar fire service had to ask for the support of the Motril one and even two personnel from the Loja fire service.
