ALM Desbanda Plaque VandalisedThe left-wing party, Adelante Almuñécar, has denounced that the plaque in memory of those that perished during La Debandá has been vandalised.

The Desbandá is the name given to the refugee column that fled advancing fascist forces along the Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical in 1937. This truly tragic event, involving being machine gunned from the air, shelled by a cruiser off shore, whilst all the time being pursued by tanks, was the prelude to the Nazi’ war-machine’s tactics used in Holland and Belgium at the outbreak of World War Two.

Well, somebody decided that it was a good idea to add the facist emblem in the corner and substitute the word “Guerra Civil” for “Communism.”

The extreme-right is on the rise in Spain, as witnessed by the emergence and electoral successes of the ultra-right party, Vox; a party that idolises the late facist dictator of Spain, Francisco Franco, and this vandalism, Adelante Almuñécar considers, is a manifestation of this.

Editorial comment: it is such a pity that there is no time machine that could transport these culprits behind the act of vandalism back to 1937, on the old N-340, when hundreds dropped from exhaustion, harried mercilessly from the air, from the sea and from the land. Perhaps the little shits would have a different point of view after that?
