Nice Try

GRA Cuffs arrestedA man accused of mugging pleaded in his defence that the victim had handed over 20 euros because he had been a muy pesao (a pain in the butt) and not because he had used violence.

In other words, the accused had pestered her until she had handed over the money rather than put up with him going on, and on. The judge, however, didn’t buy it and condemned him instead to a 23-month sentence for a mugging offence.

The incident had taken place in the early hours of November the 4th, 2018 in the centre of the city of Granada. The victim, a young woman, had been returning home along the Avenida de la Constitución when the condemned man approached and demanded that she handed over all the money that she had on her, otherwise he would take her handbag.

As well as the verbal threats, he grabbed her from behind to stop her escaping. Fearing that to refuse would bring even worse consequences, she handed over the said 20-euro note.

A judge of the first instance had condemned him to the said sentence, but he appealed before the provincial law court, with the defence that he had just worn her down with his insisting that she had handed over the money.

However, the provincial tribunal, like the first judge, believed the victim’s version of the events and confirmed the first sentence.

Furthermore, the condemned man had already been found guilty on two counts for previous muggings.
