The maritime branch of the Guardia Civil based in Motril pulled a huge, unmarked net out of the water just off the Playa Pozuelo in Almuñécar.
Obviously, such an object, with no marker buoys is a tremendous danger for swimmers and snorklers, for example – not something fun to get tangled in.
In fact, this is the fifth such net fished out by the Guardia Civil in the first six months of the year off Almuñécar beaches.
This latest find was a Trammel net some 150 metres long strung out from the rocks. Once the net was pulled aboard the police launch, it was taken to Motril Port where it was offloaded into a waste area.
A trammel (net) is a fishing net with three layers of netting which is used to entangle fish or crustacea. A slack central layer with a small mesh is sandwiched between two taut outer layers with a much larger mesh. The net is kept vertical by the floats on the headrope and weights on the bottom rope.
