As the election results continue to come in, the PSOE socialists have double the amount of seats compared to their main rivals, the PP conservatives. In some regions the PP has almost disappeared.
The feared rise of the ultra, right-wing party, Vox, has, in reality, become the Trojan Horse that has eaten the Spanish right wing from within.
Whilst the rise of the extremist, right wing that is taking hold across the rest of the European continent is tilting the continent towards a repeat of the 1930s, here in Spain, their appearance has scared voters away from even more traditional centre-right parties.
One thing is for certain, there will be a coalition left-wing government headed by Pedro Sánchez and supported by Unidos Podemos.
In the PP, heads will roll, starting with Sr. Casado who made the great mistake of swerving the party over from the centre the to far right in an attempt to stem the loss of votes to Vox. The result is that the PP lost most of its centre-right voters.
There has always been a large pool of centrist voters who alternated between the PP and PSOE when both vied to occupy the centre ground. Sr. Casado’s attempts to be more papist than the Pope has been disastrous for the party.
The biggest loser, the elephant in the room, has been ex-PM Jose María Aznar; the man that did more damage to the previous centrist PP PM, Mariano Rajoy than the opposition. Pablo Casados, was the protégé of Aznar, after all, and with him Aznarism has finally given up the ghost.
