Neat Nymph Adorns Roundabout

ALM New Altillo Roudabout StatueSo we finally have the topping on the cake, or in other words, the statue on the Altillo roundabout in Almuñécar.

The Mayor, Trinidad Herrera was out there, trying her best to look needed for the task, as the workmen lowered the bronze statue of a woman with a water urn on her shoulder  into place.

Well, actually, it’s as close as they can get it to the nymph that used to adorn the old Altillo fountain – and by old, we mean the pre-1967 one, dating back to the first decades of the 20th Century.

The original statue was bearing a large seashell whereas this one bears a cántaro (urn), which is fitting as the round about links to Calle Cántaro.

The statue, which was acquired from a shop dealing with antiques, is made from bronze and measures 235-cm high and 70 wide, set on an 80-cm high, marble pedestal.

Editorial comment: I’m sorry but I still can’t see the sense in this 2-way traffic arrangement. If the roundabout were beyond the underground, car-park exit ramp then, OK, but as it is not, there is no advantage, whatsoever, for people coming out of the underground car park – they still have to go right round the town.
