An elderly man from Scandinavia has been arrested in Nerja, accused of trying to kill his wife. The incident took place on Calle Casablanca.

According to a police statement, in the early hours of last Monday, the 70-year old of “Nordic” origin tried to hang his wife using a belt, after beating her with it. He also reportedly thumped and kicked her.

Apparently, the aggressor has mental issues and had acted “under the influence of alcohol.” The victim took the opportunity to escape from the house after he had fallen asleep.

She took refuge in the house of a neighbour and phoned the 112 emergency number from there. The victim, who complained of pains in her neck, was treated on the spot by the paramedics.

Meanwhile, the police arrested the man and took him to the police holding cells at the Guardia Civil post.

He was brought before a magistrate in Torrox who issued a restraining order, forbidding him from approaching his wife. The couple has no previous history of marital violence.
