The Guardia Civil environmental department, SEPRONA, is investigating an Almuñécar man for putting down rat poison in fruit plantation.
The 41-year-old man had been hanging up the poison in small bags to deter rats from eating his avocados; which is illegal as it is a health hazard to other animals and even people.
The investigation was opened on the 8th of November when a dog, which was being taken for a walk along a track past the plantation was poisoned. The woman saw the dog wolfing down two of these suspicious bags and immediately rushed him to a vet, which saved his life.
Rat killer can only be used in enclosed areas and never out in the open, and must be deployed in special containers that attract rats but do not let larger animals have access to their content.
After receiving the complaint the police searched the plantation and found a total of ten small bags of poison on the property.
