Nerja’s New Consul

NRJ Consul WestarcticaNerja has a new Consul: Honorary Consul to Spain for Westarctica, Dr. Joachim Michael Adlfinger. There’s a country at the South Pole, you ask; well, sort of.

This micro nation has 5,000 inhabitants… well, not really inhabitants, because they don’t live there, so let’s just stick to ‘citizens.’

Whereas several nations actually have claims to areas of the Antarctic (Argentina, Australia Chile France Norway, New Zealand and the UK) there was a part where nobody had planted a flag, until an American from California, Travis McHenry, decided to found his own nation – symbolically, that is.

Strangely, this claim has not had official recognition from any other nation… but this ex-Marine and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan doesn’t mind and has gone ahead and proclaimed himself as the Gran Duke of Westarctica.

Now, before you think that he’s barking mad and frolicking with penguins, there is a very serious aim and logic behind this: it is to heighten awareness of the importance of protecting this special continent. Yes, tongue-in-cheek Westartica is an very serious NGO.

Back to Nerja and 54-year-old Honorary Consul, Herr Aldfinger, who has lived, on and off, in that town since 2001. He heads Spain’s only consulate for this micro-nation, which is situated in his own home, and sports a plaque on the outside.

He had heard about this project through German friends and he immediately found the idea interesting. He considers that the struggle to combat climate change is of great importance, which is putting the survival of Mankind in danger, he said.

So who is Herr Aldfinger before taking up this consular post? He spent 30 years designing and making cars, during which time he worked for Geigev Us Cars in Germany. However, for the last 20 years he has been spending holidays in Nerja.

He is working, at the moment on the launch of an electric tricycle idea with a French partner, very much in keeping with his concerns over the environment and clean-energy transport.

Anyway, Ole sus huevos, and enhorabuena, Joachim.
