A woman was swept away and drowned in Vélez-Málaga last night when she tried to ford a small river on foot.
The 50-year-old woman was in the company of her husband when the incident occurred. The body was located about two hours later two kilometres further downstream.
The woman had tried to cross the river, which was swollen with the day’s rain around the same level as Hacienda Macarena in the dark. The rain, which had stopped falling by then, had left nearly 72 litres per square metre during the day.
The husband phoned 112, which immediately activated a search that finally located the body. The coroner gave permission late that same evening for the body to be removed and taken to the Instituto Anatómico Forense in Málaga for an post mortem.
