Work on Iglesia del Carmen on Calle Las Cañas in Motril has finally concluded, meaning that Semana Santa will see it back in use.
The church has been in use for Mass over the last year that work has been going on building an extension to house the Semana Santa thrones Jesús del Perdón and la Virgen de la Misericordia during Easter. It will also be used as a classroom for Sunday classes.
The problem was that the Diocese did not obtain a building permit, so work was halted for a while by the Councillor for Urban Development. They had requested one but the church is listed as a protected, 17th Century building, so you can’t just go throwing a sledgehammer around.
The church authorities went ahead anyway, which was why it was halted. The Church, considering itself above mere mortals, was not happy. But, special cases require special requirements, so the Church just had to wait.
Now the work is finally finished after completing the legal requirements and everybody is finally happy.
