A man died in Lanjarón last Saturday whilst out ploughing his olive grove near his cortijo. The exact cause is not known although heat stroke is suspected.
The victim, 75-year-old Juan O.C., may have suffered from heat stroke or a heart attack, causing him to lose consciousness and the tractor to tip over, trapping his legs.
The emergency 112 number received an alert at 13.45h and an ambulance, the fire service and the Guardia Civil were despatched to the Pago Cortijo El Cura (Cecarta) where the victim has a cortijo and a terraced olive grove.
The emergency services on the spot could do nothing for the man, who was already dead. The fire personnel were tasked with retrieving the body from under the machinery.
A neighbour had thought it strange that although he could hear the tractor’s engine going, he hadn’t seen it reappear in some time, so he went to investigate. It was he who had alerted 112.
