The centre of Motril was filled with protestors on the 25th of May, protesting against plans to convert an old air base into an immigrant holding centre.

The protest was backed by the Town Council, who refuse to issue a building licence for the project, locals from the Los Álamos area of town, which is closest to the planned centre and even those who are against illegal immigrants being held in jail-like conditions.

The movement started out as discontent expressed on social media before manifesting itself in crowds of protesting citizens.

Locals were not convinced by the reassurances given by the Central Government’s representative for the province who said that they would respect the Mayor’s objection to the project.
