Almuñécar’s Policía Local nabbed two snorkelers fishing for octopus illegally on Tuesday afternoon.

The divers were caught with 17 kilos of cuttlefish and octopus just off the Peñones del Santo (rock with a cross on it).

The Chief of Police, Manuel Ledesma, pointed out that you can’t fish cephalopods without a licence or prior permission. Furthermore, the catch was outside the legal catch size.

The police had been alerted by a local who had seen the divers off the beach of San Cristóbal, next to the said rocks. When the police arrived on the scene the two men, seeing that they had been rumbled, tried to ditch the catch
