ALM Barefoot Across SpainJulia Chi Taylor completed an amazing feat: running barefoot from the north coast of Spain to Almuñécar in aid of charity.

The 59-year-old athlete was received in Plaza de Abderramán after having completed around 1,000 kilometres in this fashion divided into 43 legs (stages) with only eight days’ rest spread out during the journey.

The object of the run was to raise funds for the Friends of Sussex Hospices (NGO), which aids people with terminal illnesses, and for Fundación Cudeca, which helps cancer sufferers.

“It has been harder than I first thought, however it has been incredible and the support that I have received along the way has been very special,” she said, adding, “This year it has been very rainy and in some parts there was snow, which made it more difficult.”

Coinciding with her arrival in Almuñécar was her birthday and she was surprised and pleased when those that had turned out to greet her had sung Happy Birthday to her. Hotel Casablanca (located in that same square) had even made her a birthday cake.

The run-project, called Barefoot Across Spain began on the 23rd of March in Suances (Cantabria) and concluded with her arrival on Saturday the 12th of May.

Enhorabuena, Julia!
