Asociaciòn Amigos del Mar, based in La Herradura, is about to launch the 2018 Student Art Competition. This year’s theme is Keep Our Seas Plastic Free and will see students from Las Gaviotas, I.E.S. Villanueva Mar and CEIP Las Maravillas de Maro participate for prizes.
Anne Zipse, President of Amigos del Mar has been working with dedicated individuals within the community to develop an educational program focused on keeping our sea plastic free, which is fully supported by the Mayor of La Herradura.
“In early 2018 the Steering Committee decided that we wanted to focus our efforts on ways to keep our sea plastic free. We discussed the need to work with residents, tourists, shopkeepers and restaurant owners. We realized that a major key to our success will be directly impacting the students in our communities to help them become ocean ambassadors and change the relationship people of all ages have with plastic. I am pleased that Natasha Langley and Clara Ávila Alguacil, two senior students from I.E.S. Villanueva Mar will be launching the competition in our local schools on Monday, April 16, 2018.”
“I watched a film by PlasticOceans.org and learned that fish think plastic particles floating in the water are a food source. Did you know that after fish or other marine life ingest plastic debris they either die or if they survive and are eaten by people, that humans are actually eating plastic with their dinner? That made a huge impact on me,” said Natasha.
“Students think they have no power or no input to make changes. Since being involved with the Student Art Competition I realized that everyone, not just adults, can do their part toward keeping our sea plastic free. I am looking forward to sharing this message as a Youth Ambassador with as many students as possible during this competition,” said Clara.
Like most people, students like to be rewarded for their artistic efforts and to that end, Community Liaison, Cristina Tiut, has secured prizes from Sport’s Corner and Burger Plaza.
Both companies, located in La Herradura, are donating the following prizes to winners at each participating school: First Prize is a pair of running shoes, Honorable Mention is a sports bag, and the Class Participation Prize is either a hotdog or hamburger party.
Deadline for entries is Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Winners will be announced at Student Graduation to be held mid-June 2018.
