Did you know that there was an old project to build a dam on Río Verde above Otívar? Well, Benny wants it revived.
The idea goes back to 1996 when the project was approved pending funding. Then it was included in the 2001 Plan Hidrológico Nacional, with funds earmarked in the National Budgets from 2002 to 2004, but nothing happened.
Ex-Mayor of Almuñécar, Juan Carlos Benavides (Benny) championed the idea when his party was in power in 2005, approaching both the Junta and Madrid to have it included in the municipal PGOU (General Urban development Plan).
But the crisis was just around the corner and neither the Zapatero or Rajoy administrations was willing to provide funds.
So, here we are in 2018 and Sr. Benavides is again calling on the Regional and Central Governments to put up the funds and build the dam.
Furthermore, he asks farmers and residents to join in the water protest on the 15th of March in the Town Hall Square to demand that they finally finish the irrigation distribution system for the Rules Dam and… get funds for the Otivar one.
