SAL Smilie CampaignSalobreña Town Hall has come to the conclusion that normal, campaign strategies, when it comes to keeping streets clean, just don’t work.

So, they’re going about it with a smile, or more accurately, with ‘smilies.’ Well, actually, their not smilies but ‘sad faces’ of the smiley kind.

The Councillor for the Environment, Gabriel Alonso, explained that they want to try a more fun approach, which he hopes, will get people talking and perhaps, taking better care of their own streets where litter and rubbish bags are concerned.

Referring to traditional campaign methods he said, “It has been demonstrated that they just don’t work, so we’ve decided to shake off our inertia and ask ourselves, ‘what can we do to change the situation.'”

So, they decided to have a look on social media and use such ‘tools’ as smilies and thought, “bingo!” So, every time the cleaning crews finds a rubbish bag that has been left outside the normal collection times, they will stick a ‘sad face’ to it.

But it doesn’t end there, because besides the friendly smilies, there will also be tighter control and fines of between 300 and 600 euros.
