The boiler-suited boys have been in out in La Herradura, honed in the art of leaning on shovels, interspersed with fits of activity – the municipal maintenance workers, no less!
This time the mission has been the widening of the pavement along the Acera de Pilar; i.e., the main, beach-road exit street. Yes, up until now, if you met somebody walking down you had to step off the pavement because it was not wide enough for two people side-by-side.
All along 50 metres of the street the pavement is being widened to a least 1-metre of width. The narrowness of the existing pavement was made worse by bollards, lampposts and pedestrians of generous girth.
The Head of the Public Works Department says that within a couple of weeks it will be finished, complete with a railing to stop people stepping off the pavement with the selfish urge to damage the bodywork of a passing car.
