CD Almuñécar City were knocked off top spot in the 3a Andaluza (Granada) for less than 24 hours following Puntalon’s 2-0 over La Malaha on Saturday night.
CDAC travelled to Cullár Vega keen to recover quickly from the previous weekend’s 2-1 loss away to La Malaha.
Nacho Checa made his debut in goal for City who also had Danny Mulholland and Tre Hayes back from suspension.
The game was evenly balanced during the first half. City had a goal disallowed for offside after 20 minutes and at the other end Checa was called into action to make two top quality saves. The sides went in level at the break.
The second half was keenly contested with no clear cut chances until much later. However, City’s task became much harder when Tre Hayes was dismissed for two yellow cards, the second coming for re-entering the pitch as a substitute before the referee had waved him on.
Tomi Basualdo moved into the forward position as he did at La Malaha last weekend and it was he who broke the deadlock. Kasper Mikkelson arrowed a long free kick into the box, drawing Cullár’s goalkeeper from his line in the belief he could claim the ball. Tomi timed his jump perfectly, getting there first and heading into the empty net. With just 13 minutes remaining it looked as though it would be the winning goal.
Cullár looked to respond immediately, forcing Checa into another top class save, tipping a long range effort over the bar. City broke again and looked as though they had scored a second, only for the goal to disallowed again for offside. Sadly, a clean sheet for Checa on his debut was not to be. With three minutes left on the clock a Cullár free kick was headed into the top corner to level the game.
CDAC refused to accept just a draw and pushed for the win and were right to do so. Deep into injury time there was a scramble in the Cullár area and the ball broke free to Abdul Ibrahim who buried the chance with the last kick of the game.
Man of the match had to be the excellent goalkeeper Nacho Checa who made several fine saves in his first appearance for the club.
Having lost narrowly in La Malaha the week before dropping two points at Cullár would have not been a disaster but would have slowed the momentum gained by CD Almuñécar City in their excellent start to the season and the win means they can look forward to the top-of-the-table clash with Puntalon next Saturday with a two point cushion.
The game is 100% confirmed for the Estadio Municipal Francisco Bonet in Almuñécar at 18:00 on Saturday 9 December. What better way for the side to return to their home than a match against the team in second place?
