DIY Yellow Lines

SPN False Yellow LineA man in Bullas, Murcia, was fined 3,000 euros by the municipal police for painting a fake, yellow line in front of his garage, to prevent people from parking there.

Our hero, Mateo, considers that the police have gone on ‘exaggeration overdrive’ with the amount that he has been fined, pointing out that it would take him five months to be able to pay it off.

The policeman who wrote out the fine, on the other hand, says that Mateo broke a law which carries this large fine for “installing, taking down, moving, hiding or modifying road signs.”

The DIY yellow line had worked wonderfully up til now because nobody had parked in front of his garage, yet, Mateo claims that he didn’t paint the said line – the said paint job just joins a hitherto interrupted stretch of yellow line.

And he’s not taking it lying down because he has been out with his camera searching for other instances of “self-extending no-parking lines.” He claims he’s found 25 instances.

Furthermore, Mateo claims that the policeman who fined him has always had it in for him since they had had a loud argument some years ago over a parking offence.
