Six trees, all ficus, are wrecking the pavement along Calle Tetuán in Almuñécar, with their roots, so they are being removed this week.
Anybody with a ficus in their garden will know that they are a nightmare, which it makes it all the more surprising that the municipal gardeners should have chosen to provide shade along the said street using these blighters.
It’s not just a case of the expense of repairing the pavement ever so often, but rather because the Town Hall has received numerous complaints from pedestrians, tripping over the irregular pavement surface.
Furthermore, it’s not only the visible damage, but also the invasion of roots into the underground water mains & drains, telephone and electricity conduits.
So, what are they going to plant in their place? Palms, of course, of the Coco Plumos variety (Queen Palms).
