It was back in January 2015 that the Almuñécar Town Hall announced that it was going to undertake major work on the Paseo del Altillo – nothing happened.
The project, which was opposed by Sr. Benavides, envisaged turning the through road into 2-way usage with a complete overhaul of the road surface.
The second phase, which would require permission from Costas, was to widen the road from the Altillo to the El Santo, (rock with the cross on it).
Neither the first phase nor the second one ever saw the light of day. Permission from Costas wasn’t forthcoming so the whole package was pushed to the back of a drawer in the Town Hall. Until now…
Although phase two is going to stay in its dusty resting place, phase one has been pulled out and dusted off – they’re going to sort out the road surface on the Altillo. And let’s face it, the whole flat-cobblestone idea has been a disaster – it was much better when the road was just plain tarmac.
Furthermore, taking advantage of the fact that they are going to pull the whole lot up, they will turn the single-lane road into a 2-way one. Work will begin in January next year, taking ten months to complete and has a budget of 200,000 euros.
Precisely because ten months of continuous roadworks would be a disaster for summer tourism, the work will be divided into two phases: the first lasting until Semana Santa. The second phase would begin after summer.
Editorial comment: how can you turn the upper Altillo into 2-way traffic, if it doesn’t extend to El Santo? Will they do away with a metre or so of the paseo leading to the Santo to create the extra lane?
