Work on Motril’s new shopping complex, which will be built along the Avenida de Europa, (next to Alcampo), has begun with earth-moving work.
The complex, when complete, will have comercial outlets such as Decathlon or Mercadona, as well as other businesses.
The Mayor, Flor Almón, together with the Councillors for Urban Development, Antonio Escámez and Economy, Francisco Sánchez-Cantalejo, popped along for some heroic poses for the official photograph and to nod sageously at the 25,000 sq/m building plot.
Flor Almón said that this new complex would bring with it employment, both in its construction, as well as staff for the shops, and was another keystone in the economic development of the town.
But Councillor Escámez said that they didn’t want to lose the 200 chiromoyo trees that had occuppied the plot, hence their campaign to ‘find a new home for them.’ A company from Jete volunteered to uproot, transport and replant the trees.
Finally, the said councillor said that the work would take between three and six months to complete, adding that Mercadona and Decathlon had already applied for building licenes, so that they can begin just as soon as the land is cleared and levelled, which should be just after Christmas.
