Work on making Motril Port a quieter place when ferries are tied up for the night is underway.
After determining where the existing electricy, water mains, rain drains and fibre optic cables area – revolutionary forethought – work began digging things out and knocking other things down.
When they’ve finished, docked ferries can plug into a dockside electricity supply thus avoiding running their diesel generators, which are both noisy and pollute copiously.
According to somebody’s calculator, plugging into a dockside electricy supply will save 78,000 trees in 12 months. Just to clarify this surprising calculus, ferries dump 771 tonnes of CO2 into the air each year… which requires 78,000 trees to be planted to absorb it.
Hmmm, everytime I motor down to the coast on my 250 I will probably have to plant a shrubbery, which should please the wild boars and goats.
But I digress, the above cited work has a budget of 445,000 euros and should be concluded by the end of the year, or if you prefer, two shrubberies and a modest herd of Triffids in carbon deposits.
