Spain has just 40 days to take in over 15,000 refugees if it intends to meet its pledge before the international community. There is no way it will acheive it, even if it had the intention.
But then again, many NGO’s believe that the Government never had the slightest intention of taking in the 17,337 refugees it had agreed to, which is why Spain has only found room for 1,724 refugees to date; i.e., 10%.
To meet the pledge target by the 26th of September, Spain would have to take in 350 refugees every day until then – ain’t gonna happen. Sure, 200 might make it past the Ceuta/Melilla fences by rushing them but most of them are back on the Moroccan side before you can say, “Nice seeing you!”
Bearing all this in mind, over 150 social organisations have united under the banner of Venid Ya! (Come Now!) using a pressure campaign to whip up some enthusiasm from the Government.
The Director General of Oxfam Intermón, José María Vera, said that his organisation is weighing up the possibility of taking out legal action against the Government, precisely because it is blatantly obvious that Madrid won’t lift a finger before the 26th. No matter that Italy, Greece and Turkey are awash with refugees, Spain’s commitment to the EU distribution plan has the durability of a chocolate teapot.
Editorial note: here’s a suggestion: deport Spain’s teeming masses of politicians and replace them with refugees – just a thought… could fly! seriously though, with yesterday’s terrorist attack, the Government would find little opposition to falling down on their commitment from a growing sector of the population.
