The municipal cleaning crew were surprised to find an item of US ammunition on the beach walkway more or less in front of the secondary school in La Herradura.

The object (Marine Location Marker C2A2) is a phosphorous marker flare in its aluminium casing, which is classified as a B-class explosive. The flare bears a warning and advises that if found local authorities should be informed at once.

If its charge is intact, the phosphorus can cause pretty horrific burns as it burns at such a high temperature, once it reacts with saltwater.

The Policía Local and Guardia Civil were informed and the latter’s bomb-disposal squad (TEDAX) were called in pick it up, which they did, transferring it to a nearby quarry for detonation.

That such a thing should be washed up on a beach is not a surprise, but to be found placed on a beach walkway means that somebody found it and dumped it there… odd.
