Villa Astrida on Playa Granada in Motril was the home of the Belgian Monarchs, but it may soon become a luxury hotel.
During 30 long summers, Fabiola and Baudouin enjoyed this 26,000m property on land that had been ceded to them by the then sugarcane company, Azucarera Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
After the deaths of the Belgian monarchs (Baudouin 1993 & Fabiola in 2014), the villa became part of a trust set up by other royal-family members. The said trust now intends to move into the tourist sector, according the the Motril Town Hall.
The trust is currently negotiation with the Town Hall, as well as luxury-hotel chains. Such an outcome would have a considerable positive affect on local tourism.
Again, according to the Town Hall, the projected hotel would be on two floors and have around 120 rooms.
