A Salobreña aero-modeller, Rafael Frati, won the Manteca-Fly Ciudad de Almuñécar (model aircraft racing).
The second place went to the Almuñequero, Abel Martín, and third to Francisco Jiménez from Granada.
This radio-controlled model-aircraft event is held annually and is organized by the RC Costa Tropical, based in Almuñécar. This year eleven competitors took part on the Playa Puerta del Mar.
There is a twist to this event because not only do the ‘pilots’ have to wrestle with the radio-control unit, but they also have to scoff down a mantecado and knock back a chupito de anis…
God, it must have looked like the skies over London, August 1940, with this titanic struggle to eat a mantecado without choking, slug back a shot of aniseed, without your eyes imploding… and race your aircraft, all at the same time!
The event drew a good crowd but nobody was strafed. Prizes and trophies were awarded and then everybody helped to clean up the beach, littered with crashed aircraft and unconscious competitors…
