Yes, this Motril-based Guardia Civil association has been busy raising funds to  to send school materials to children in Ecuador who had been affected by the 7.4 earthquake on the 16th of April this year, which left many dead and thousands homeless.

The Motril Councillor for Education, Mercedes Sánchez, accompanied by the Chairman of the association, José Cabrera, expressed her gratitude to the schools in Motril for their collaboration with the cause, as well as the many individuals that have made it possible with their generosity, to provide these Ecuadorian kids with badly needed school materials.

“Each day I feel even prouder to live in Motril. The residents of the town are continually demonstrating their solidarity by participating in charity events in order to help those in difficulties,” said Councillor Mercedes Sánchez.

She went on to point out that the Guardia Civiles Solidarios are “an example to emulate,” as they “carry the name of Motril to every corner that needs aid,” she said.

“They have travelled to Ecuador in person to face the terrible reality of a devastated area, where they have worked generously to try to bring normality back to these boys and girls,” she concluded.

The Chairman of the Guardia Civiles Solidarios, José Cabrera, explained how since 2003 they have organized humanitarian aid campaigns.

“Two weeks ago we were in Ecuador,” said, “where Operación Manabí has been closely followed by the authorities there.” The government of that country has dedicated a lot of resources to the devastated area to provide housing to get things back to normality,” he said, adding that the association had provided schoolbooks, pencils and other material for almost 120,000 schoolchildren.

He concluded by pointing out that Motril has provided 17,000 school books, as well as writing materials and implements.
