There was a fire in a block of flats in the centre of Nerja on the morning of Saturday the 17th December. The affected building is 7-storeys, containing 83 flats.
The incident occurred in Edificio Albaida on the Avenida del Mediterráneo, which is just in front of Hotel Riu Mónica; i.e., very near the Playa de La Torrecilla.
The firemen ordered the evacuation of 30-odd residents to be on the safe side as they tackled the fire in a ground-floor flat.
It appears that the fire was accidentally caused by a 34-year-old woman who had used an electric fire to dry a towel. Although the fire was rapidly extinguished, the flat was gutted by the flames.
Two people were treated for smoke inhalation at the area hospital in Vélez-Málaga; a 65-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman.
