A bar in La Herradura has pledged to give away a caña (small beer) to anybody who comes in with a plastic cup filled with cigarette butts from the beach.

The bar is Mesón Baena, run by José Luis Baena, is the bar in question and the idea is his personal way of collaborating with the Limpiemos La Playa, Cuidemos La Herradura campaign.

As can be imagined, the idea has generated a lot of interest and support from the villagers.

The Councillor for the Environment expressed his gratitude towards Mesón Baena and hopes that other establishments will participate. He also pointed out that one fag end, despite its small size, can contaminate 50 litres of water…

Editorial comment: Of course, none of this would be necessary if smokers didn’t throw their cigarette butts away instead of stubbing them well out and putting them in a rubbish bag together with their other waste and take it back home with them – you’ve got room to bring; you’ve got room to take it away… and pigs might fly.
