San Juan Arrests

alm-sanjuan-02Well, when the younger generation comes down to the coast for San Juan, many are not short of illegal substances. That was just as true in the 60’s as nowadays.

From 14.00h on the 23rd of June until 14.00h on the 24th, the Guardia Civil had a field day with road blocks, sniffer dogs and scarcely suppressed sniggering.

In the meantime another department within the Guardia Civil, tasked with environmental protection, kept an eye on those beaches with brush or woodland behind them.

In those 24 hours they stopped 265 cars and took note of the identities of 216 people.

In the case of one vehicle, they had cause to arrest two occupants over a knife incident in Almuñécar – they had fled in their car but were eventually caught on the N-340 level with Salobreña.

As for drink-driving and driving under the influence of narcotics, 14 people gave positive readings for alcohol and seven for drugs.

Meanwhile, on the beaches, 39 people were charged with public health issues; i.e., for consuming narcotics in public places or for carrying knives.

In these types of interventions the Guardia Civil confiscated hashish, marihuana, cocaine and seven joints… oh, and five knives.

But despite everything, everybody had a good time… especially the police.
