Streets Closed for Roadworks

SAL Calle Cristo OnLWork on Salobreña’s Calle Cristo has reached a stage where it has become necessary to close Calle Portichuelo to traffic.

Drivers won’t be able to access this street for about a month, meaning that you’ll need to take an alternative route to come down from the old town.

For example, you can take Calle Caracho if you’re coming down from Calle Antequera. If you’re not too hot on the street names, the main street down from the top is Calle Antequera and comes down past Restaurante Traviesa and the Paseo de los Flores under the castle.

When you get to the bottom, you can turn left for the beach or right – the right-hand street is Calle Portichuelo, which is the one that has been closed to traffic.

Work on Calle Cristo is now in its fourth and final phase; in fact, Phase Three and Four are being carried out simultaneously, meaning that it all should be concluded by the end of June… or the beginning of July.

The Mayor apologizes for the inconveniences caused, but emphasized the importance of the work being carried out; i.e., sorting out all the underground plumbing and wiring infrastructure.

Although the whole of Calle Cristo is closed to normal traffic, there is a useable lane for emergency vehicles and residents in special cases.

The original dead lines weren’t met – it was all supposed to concluded in six months from commencement – because of the bedrock on which the town sits, which proved to be more time consuming than anticipated, when it come to digging trenches for the pipes etc.

Anyway, the works have a budget of 600,000 euros, which has been covered by a 3-million handout from the Mancomunidad. The rest of the money will be used on Calle Ladera de la Cruz, Calle Rosario and the old beach road.
