Divers from the Salobreña Club de Buceo Glup Glup carried out an urgent sweep of the seabed off La Caleta on Sunday the 8th.
The recent gale-force winds and accompanying high seas littered the seabed; amongst the debris would have been the kiosk on El Lavadero, had its battered remains not been retrieved before it sank. However, just about everything inside the kiosk did end up at the bottom of the sea.
The divers managed to recover around 200 kilos of rubbish, some of it highly contaminating, such as lead, mineral oils and mercury (from the kiosk).
The Chairman of the dive club, José Manuel del Pozo, explained on the local radio that although it was obviously not the intention of the kiosk owners to dump its content in the sea, they could still face a fine for environmental damage. It’s bad enough, of course, losing their source of income without that added blow.
He also explained that the six divers were limited to a maximum depth of 42 metres, so anything below that depth will remain where it is… unless the next storm spits it out onto the beach, that is.
