First Almuñécar International Chess Tournament

ALM Chess Tournament OnLChess player from Cádiz, Juan Pedro Cordón, won the Almuñécar International Chess Tournament, the first of its kind. Runner up was Motril chess player, Andrés Sánchez Martínez.

The event was held last weekend (10th/11th) at Hotel Helios on Playa San Cristóbal.

Competition winner, Cordón Gutiérrez, for example, enjoys an international ranking of 2193. That explains the official title of the competition of “Sub 2200.”

The top 12 players were: Javier Jurado Vázquez and Juan Miguel Pérez Toré, from a Málaga club coming in 3rd and 4th. They were followed by Bernardo Amate Tortosa from Almería and Enrique Borrego Mata and Luis Cabrera Ruiz from Granada.

All told, 76 players took part, using the Swiss format of seven rounds of 60-minute matches + 30 seconds per player.

Editorial comment: can’t help noticing a lack of foreign names amongst the competing chess players in this international tournament…
