The Almuñécar Policía Local are carrying out a drugs-&-alcohol clamp down on drivers over Christmas.
The mere fact that they announced the measure long before it was due to come into force indicates that it is more of a dissuasive measure than a campaign to actually catch people under the influence. However, some are sure to fall.
The Councillor for Citizen Safety, Juan José Ruiz Joya, explained, “The campaign will be carried out in conjunction with the DGT (Traffic Department) until the 26th, although the municipal police will continue with check points until the 6th of January.”
The municipal police, besides recommending that car users stay well clear of alcohol if they intend to drive, also urge even pedestrians to be careful, because during 2013 of the 161 pedestrians killed in traffic accidents, 44% had elevated levels of drugs or alcohol in their blood streams.
