The municipal police of Lucena in the province of Córdoba finally brought a man before a judge for the death of a 5-month-old donkey.
The animal was part of a nativity scene, together with another donkey of the same age and the said man thought it a good wheeze to sit on its back for a photo – trouble is that the man weighs around 150 kilos.
The incident was brought to the attention of the police by two animal welfare organisations: Círculo Podemos Animalista Lucena and the Asociación de Defensa del Borrico (Adebo).
They claimed that the animal had literally been ‘reventado’ (burst its insides) by this individual for the sake of a photo to post on WhatsApp.
They claim that the man had stepped over the low fence, pulled the donkey, called Platero, around until he suddenly decided to jump on it.
Despite locals reporting this on the day, it was not until two days later when the suffering animal could hardly keep on its legs that the Town Hall called in the municipal vet. The vet recommended that it be transferred immediately to a specilized animal clinic, but the animal was never to return because it died the next morning.
The two animal rights group are determined to hold both the individual and the Town Hall responsible.
