We had a chance to speak with Luis Aragón, Almuñécar Councillor for the Environment and person responsible for the Peña Escrita mountain park.
Sr. Aragón said that, yes, animals had died, but from natural causes; some were old, for example.
He explained that as the idea is to return the park to it’s original concept; i.e., a mountain park with animals that belong to the area, these animals are not being replaced.
He also pointed out that on the first animal to die up there was the hippopotamus, which was under the previous mayor’s time in office, and he doesn’t remember anybody making a fuss over it then.
We asked him why there had been no press release in response to the CANDA accusations and he simply replied, “People didn’t vote for me to get into pointless squabbles; they voted for me to do my job.”
