There’s a photo exhibition in Motril with over a hundred old photos of traditional farming implements and methods.
The exhibition is being held on the ground floor of the Museo de Historial de Motril and will run until the 24th of January next year.
The photos depict scenes ranging from the 1920’s right up to the turn of the century and cover predominantly the sugarcane farming industry.
The photos come from the municipal archives and the private collection of Arsenio Rueda Marín, who was the agricultural engineer that introduced the Armiz variety of sugarcane into the area.
Also included in the exhibition are news articles from 1931 and 1944. The irrigation of the Motril vega, for example, was greatly improved when the Río Guadalfeo was contained between riverbank walls between 1944 and 1946, the building of irrigation channels 1953-1956 for Los Llanos de Carchuna, as well as the Azud de Vélez weir in 1956.
The Mayor said that the Town Hall was fully behind and agreement between local farmers and Alkol Biotech which will see the limited reintroduction of sugarcane. The project could spread to other parts of the south coast with similar climates, cultivating a hybrid cane that could be used as a high-production biomass for celulose.
Damn! That started off interesting but didn’t half go on!
