Strange title, but that is the translation of the Encuentro Sierra – Mar, which took place in Almuñécar on the weekend of the 8th/9th.
These ‘encuentros’ are a sort of get-together between an inland village and a coastal one, and on this occassion between Almuñécar and Válor in the Alpujarra.
For the 3rd consecutive year Almuñécar has joined for such a fiesta with an Alpujarra village – on the previous occasions it was with Murtas and Alpujarra de la Sierra.
The Almuñécar brass band gave a performance of Fandango Cortijeros and the Válor contingent put on a Moors & Christians parade. Everybody also had the chance to enjoy an autumnal castañada (roast chestnuts and anis).
Valor, with its 600 inhabitants stands at 900 metres above sea level and is close to the Almería border; i.e. La Alpujarra Almeriense. Remember, when you say, Las Alpujarras you mean the Granada one and the Almería one together.
Anyway, the Mayor of Válor, María Asunción Martínez Fernández, headed the ‘mountain folk’ and the Mayor of Almuñécar headed for the bar… Nah – just joking!
