Work on Roman Irrigation System in Almuñécar

archeological restoriation work in almunecarThe Almuñécar Archeological Service, belonging to the Board for Culture, has been at work on Calle Real.

Just where Calle Real divides into Calle Alta del Mar and Calle Baja del Mar there is a thick-glass display set into a wall which protects a water system from the Roman era.

This subterranean waterway carried water down to the Plaza de la Rosa where in times long past there were pools or tanks for fish-salting. Excavations also turned up the broken remains of many amphoras.

The work carried out was to clear the system of plants, roots and moss before installing a new, stainless steel frame for the reinforced-glass cover.
