The town’s bylaws stipulate that if plot owners do not maintain empty building plots clear of rubbish and weeds, the Town Hall will step in and do it for them, and then pass them the bill.
The emphasis is to prevent them from becoming a focal point for pests and vermin, as well as a fire hazard in the summer.
Residents along Calle San Marco had been complaining about one abandoned building plot in particular which was overgrown and was becoming a dumping ground for carelessly left rubbish, so Limdeco stepped in and completely cleared it last week.
The bylaw concerned, which came into being at the end of last year, not only contemplates the cleaning bill being passed on to the owners, but also provides for a fine of between 901 and 45,000 euros. To date, however, no fine has been imposed when the cleaning bill has been passed on.
