Fiestas de la Virgen del Rosario

SAL Band festivalThe old Town Hall Square at the top of Salobreña was the venue for a concert of brass bands; i.e., bandas de musica during the weekend of the 4th/5th.

This year the concert was in homage of Enrique Pareja Bosch, and the invited brass band was the one from Alfacar, near the provincial capital.

This event, of course, was just one part of the Virgen del Rosario fiestas that took place over last weekend. One-hundred and sixty musicians took part with the Salobreña local brass band opening the event.

The Banda Municipal de Música de Alfacar, conducted by Alberto Víilchez, played numbers by Jacob de Hann, Chueca and el Ayora Flamenca de Enrique Pareja, whilst the Salobreña band did the sound track of Memories of Africa, as well as Concerto d’amore and Torre del Oro by Dorado Janeiro.

A total of 48 floats and carriages took part, 19 of them competing for the best design, with the winner taking 800 euros in cash. Los Fiesteros (The Party Goers) won the said prize.

Second Prize (500 euros) went to La Amistad and Third Prize to Los Cortieros that’s not a spelling mistake, by the way but just the literal spelling of how cortijeros is pronounced in Andaluz.

There were also horse-riding events in the afternoon on Playa de los Faroles and a dancing performance near the Playa del Peñón Flamenco dancing school run by Cristina Rosado.

The evening was rounded off with a final firework display which market the return of the Virgen del Rosario procession to the church, accompanied by the Coro Rociero de Mujeres Tropical.
