Now, I’m probably one of only three people left in the world who haven’t read ‘Women are from Venus, Men etc…’ and the truth of the matter is that I realise that men and women seem to think differently, but should we really make a point of it?
Well, there are definitely some people who feel that we should celebrate this difference and in fact, are prepared to dedicate an entire congress to it, in sunny Salobreña of all places. From the 3rd to the 5th of October inclusive, the very first Mentes Femininas (Female Minds) congress will be held at the Convention Centre in Hotel Salobreña, with the intention of highlighting the tremendous contribution of women from different places and countries, with special emphasis on those of Latin American origin.
Approximately 50 women are anticipated at the Convention Centre, each given the chance to display their distinctive skills and achievements in areas as diverse as art and culture, politics and feminism, science and health, as well as enterprise and new technologies.
According to organisers, Sonia Villar and María Martín, the inspiration for this event came from the observation of comparatively few females attending conferences and events, particularly within the scientific ambit.
What is hoped is that through the Congress, people will become increasingly aware of and open to the existing and potential, unique contributions of females in their fields of expertise, starting from university research through to actual knowledge and real discoveries/achievements.
The time is long overdue for the brilliant minds of some very special women to be brought out on display and pushed forward from the background scenario which they have traditionally occupied.
What is hoped is that through activities such as dynamic presentations, debates, music, comics, astronomical observation and book signings, the international arena will stand up and take notice of these impressive individuals, encouraging the formation of associations, the participation of public and private institutions to instigate ongoing communication and the development of further ideas and projects both within the academic and entrepreneurial sector.
For additional information and the opportunity to sign up to this pioneering event, take a look at www.mentesfemeninas.com and don’t feel too intimidated about the prospect of focusing only on female minds. The reality is that we need to give every brilliant mind the chance to shine, regardless of sex, creed, age, race or other preconceived characteristics!
