Motril Vs. Torrenueva Over Sexism

ECO Volleyball Poster OnLWell, what started out as a complaint about an allegedly sexist poster has turned into an exchange of broadsides between Motril and Torrenueva.

An IU spokesman raised the complaint, claiming that the image of a girl in a ‘bikini’ with a football against her breasts was “sexist,” but it didn’t stop there because the Mayor of Motril and a couple of her female councillors took the opportunity to express their indignation, too.

The Mayor of Torrenueva pointed out that the same poster has been used for the last six years and that how curious it was, with municipal elections looming, that suddenly the Mayor of Motril found it sexist. He also pointed out that the girl is not in a bikini but the proper sports attire for six-aside football tournament on a beach.

Our readers will remember that there is no love lost between newly independent Torrenueva and their erstwhile masters, the Motril Town Hall.

But an admonishment was handed down from the Regional Government; from the Delegate for the Board of Equality & Health, Maria José Sánchez. The Torrenueva Mayor, Sr. Carrascosa, took the poster down himself, out of deference to the Junta and not to the Mayor of Motril, Sra. Chamorro.

He considers it ridiculous: “if it were a male football player stopping the ball with his chest, nobody would say boo, but as it is a female, suddenly she’s stopping the ball with her breasts and it is now lascivious. Is that sexual equality?”

He concluded by inviting the Mayor of Motril to withdraw the poster for the summer fair as it has a woman in a gypsy dress: “it could be considered sexist if observed through the same eyes that found our one so.”
