Moonlight Dancing on Las Explanadas

MOT Explanadas OnLA huge summer moon accompanied the first dance on the Paseo de la Explanadas in over 40 years.

The event, organized jointly by the Town Hall and the Centro Recreativo Cultural, drew around 500 dancers for an evening of traditional Spanish dance music (verbena). The Cerro de la Virgen provided a stunning backdrop in the moonlight.

The dance band, Hispania kept everybody dancing until midnight, which was when it was concluded so as not to disturb the sleep of the locals.

The last time such an event was organized on the Explanadas was 44 years ago, and was brought back at the petition of the senior citizens of Motril, who remembered it well from their younger years.

Such was the success of the evening that the Mayor has promised that they will try to organize two for next summer; one and the beginning and one at the end.

The Centro Recreativo Cultural was founded in 1929 and at its height in the 50’s and 60’s had over a thousand members. With the success of this open-air dance evening, the club hopes to revive interest in it and attract new members.
