Just when you thought it was time to relax into the summer rhythm, along comes another major sporting event this Sunday 15th June, in our own coastal oasis!
For the 11th year running, cyclists, walkers and runners will be sprinting their way up to Peña Escrita in honour of the Almuñécar athlete, Miguel Rodrigo, who has been involved in the founding of the local cycling club, athletics group and other sporting associations.
Of special concern to Miguel, is the participation of today’s youth in as much sporting activity as possible, not just for the sake of winning, but giving it a go. “Drag them away from the technology and into the open air here!” we all exclaim in agreement!
Well, here’s your chance to do the same. You will need to enroll first (for example at Berbikes in Calle Guadíx, just down from Almuñécar’s municipal market) and the challenging climb is staggered so that you don’t get trampled, or involved in some kind of traffic jam between walkers, runners and cyclists!
And beware: this ascent might seem simple at a mere 20 kilometres, but you need to take into consideration the steep rise of over 1000 metres. Apparently, the cheer of the other participants certainly helps to raise your spirits and perhaps even your knees.
