Summer Fire Restrictions

AND Infoca HeliThe Motril Fire Service has issued a reminder concerning fire restrictions during the summer. The advice given is relevant for everybody on the Costa Tropical and inland.

From the 1st of June to the 15th of October it is absolutely forbidden to light fires in the countryside; either to burn cuttings or for cooking; i.e., BBQ’s.

In fact, it doesn’t matter that it’s a public picnic area with brick BBQ grills laid on – you can’t use them.

Such is the danger of a forest fire that you can’t even drive along caminos forestals, as there is a danger that the heat of the exhaust could start a fire, so forget about driving your 4×4 through the mountains or riding a motorbike up there, for that matter.

And it is not only tracks because dry river beds are included in this prohibition.

Town halls have to be especially careful with fiesta fireworks and can only stage them if they have contingency plans in place.

Just recently, a town in the drought-hit region of Valencia decided to have a firework display even though they were warned not to by the local fire service – in the end, half the surrounding mountains went up in flames, and that was the beginning of May…

Summing up, if you see the slightest amount of smoke rising in the countryside, phone 112 – better safe than sorry.
