New Traffic Laws came into force yesterday, which include up to 1,000-euro fines for drink-driving.
The modification to the Ley de Tráfico y Seguridad Vial envisages this hefty fine for those whose alcohol level is double the amount permitted, which stands at 0.5g of alcohol per litre of blood or 0.25g per litre of exhaled air.
A guilty driver could also face a fine of that amount if he has already been fined that same year for drink driving, no matter how much alcohol he had in his blood that or this time around.
Needless to say, you will also kiss goodbye to between four and six points off your Spanish driving licence.
Over 97,623 driving infractions of all kinds were registered in the province of Granada on open roads during the last year, which works out at around 267 a day.
The new law not only obligates minors under 16 to wear safety helmets on bicycles, but also fines such riders (or better said, their parents) if they are not done up correctly.
More on this at a later date.
